“Old” Tyrone was located in Seward County and existed but a short time. The Tyrone Town Company filed its plat 10 May 1888. The town took its name from Tyrone, Pennsylvania which was the home town of one of the promoters, Mr Watson. The location was determined by where the railroad had built over into the Neutral Strip “just a whisper” to pick up Texas cattle for shipment to market. The plat was located on the NE ½ of the SE ¼ of Section 15, Township 35, Range 34 in Seward County, about three miles southwest of Liberal, Kansas.
B.E. Blake, father of prominent Liberal businessman Al Blake, was one of the Tyrone postmasters. The post office, west of the main town, was established in January 1888 and moved to Oklahoma to “New” Tyrone in May 1892.
