Towns and Places

Oak City (1887 - c 1889)

Oak City was founded in 1887, on the SE1/4 of Section 9, west of Liberal and just a mile northwest of the town site of Old Tryone and it’s big shipping yards. There was a store, a school, hotel and several other buildings. The town flourished for about two years. The post office was established in May, 1887 with Ruby P Cook as the first postmistress and was discontinued in July, 1888 and moved to Tyrone, Oklahoma.

When the railroad crossed over the Neutral Strip and constructed the big shipping pens, Oak City’s populace moved southeast to the railroad. Some old Oak City buildings were moved to Liberal including the Oak City Hotel which became a part of the Carson House in Liberal. Thus perished another potential Chicago or Dallas.
