Beer City (1887-1915)

Beer City was never incorporated and was located directly south of Liberal’s Kansas Avenue just across the Oklahoma state line. With a name taken from the product for which it was known, it was said its civic pride was nil and its social life everything. Catering to cowboys, outlaws and local residents alike, it was first mentioned in 1887 and was vacated about 1915. One of its most infamous establishments was the White Elephant Saloon run by Pussy Cat Nell, formerly of Dodge City, and her girls. Well into the mid-20th Century older residents told stories of picking up bottle corks by the thousands which came to the surface after periods of flooding.
